Tell Your Own Story: Inside Our Writers’ Workshop with Dr. Nancy Snow
After the Tokyo launch of Battleship Diplomat, Parthenon Japan hosted a small writers’ workshop with author Dr. Nancy Snow.
The launch party was a lively celebration. The workshop was quieter and more personal. We kept the group small so everyone could talk face to face. Participants came from very different professions and creative fields, and that mix is what made the room so lively.
Starting with the author’s own story
Dr. Snow began with her own path to the book. It started with a personal discovery. In 2005, she learned that her father had served aboard the USS Missouri during its 1946 Mediterranean goodwill cruise. That discovery grew into years of research and, eventually, a published work of diplomatic history.
Her story gave the group a starting point. Every book begins somewhere, often with a single question someone decides to follow.
Getting started, and getting unstuck
After brief introductions, the conversation turned to the practical side of writing: how to begin, and what to do when the words stop coming. Participants shared how writer’s block shows up in their own work and what helps them push through it.
Because each person came from a different field, the answers varied widely. A strategy that works for a business writer is not always the one that works for a creative professional. Hearing the full range was part of the value.
Expression across fields and cultures
The conversation kept returning to one theme: expression. How do we put ideas into words? How do we communicate across cultural lines? How do we give shape to our own stories? Each participant brought a different angle, and the exchange was open and thoughtful.
At the launch, Dr. Snow described how the Missouri often made its most important statement simply by showing up. Writing works the same way. The first step is to show up on the page. The workshop ended with a call to action for participants: record your own history and tell your own story.
The time felt far too short. It was a warm and thought-provoking end to a memorable evening.
We are grateful to Dr. Snow and to those who participated for their candor and insight.
